It is with great sadness and shock that I report the sudden passing of Barrie Sheard, our archivist. Barrie passed away on Wednesday 22nd January 2020 at Royal Derby Hospital. Further details will be posted when known. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

The below received via Facebook from his daughters Angela & Barbara; (25th Jan 2020)

It is with deep gratitude, love and sadness we announce the passing of our dad and best friend, J Barrie Sheard.
His life journey came to a sudden AND peaceful end on 22nd January 2020. He reached the grand old age of 85.
He lived and loved life so well, sharing love, joy and optimism with so many. His shining presence will remain forever bright here and beyond.
We will be holding a farewell gathering locally in Derbyshire this next week for all his family and friends to come together in celebration of his life. We will let you know soon when and where.
We will be creating a space for photos and words, (if you could look out a photo of you together with him and bring with please.)
For the ones who cannot attend, you can send words/photos to email Thankyou.
With much love from
Barbara & Angela

Ted Olpin – OD (1939-1946)

It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that Ted Olpin of Allestree, Derby died on 27th December 2019.
One of our oldest OD’s having been at St. Helen’s House, Overton Hall and also Amber Valley Camp.
Ted started at St. Helen’s House way back in 1936 having started in the Preparatory School in 1936.
He was in the first group of pupils to be evacuated to Overton Hall on Saturday 2nd September 1939 and consequently arrived at  the newly built Amber Valley Camp in June 1940, returning to St. Helen’s House in September 1945.
Funeral arrangements are at St. Nicholas Church, Allestree Lane in Allestree on Monday 20th January 2020 commencing at 12 noon.
His wife is Beryl Olpin.
Arrangements are in hand to receive a detailed obituary which will eventually be placed into the OD Website.
It is my intention to attend the funeral on behalf of the Society, perhaps other members will take the opportunity to attend.

Some Nice Feedback

This reply received from Terry Hurst OD (1952-1957) who had not been in touch with the society for a number of years. It was really rewarding to receive the following from Terry, after our archivist had been in touch with him. He is now on our mailing list and will receive all our correspondence from now on.

Hi Graham

Many thanks for prompt action in sending the newsletter. I have spent a couple of very happy hours this morning exploring the website and enjoying the happy memories thus brought to mind. I moved away from Derby in 1962, just five years after leaving school, and after spells in Birmingham and Northampton I moved to the  north east in 1973. Weekend working and a growing family made it difficult to maintain contact and thus for much of the intervening years I have been but a silent member. I look forward to reading further issues of the newsletter with great interest. It was a huge privilege to attend DS (1952-57) and I have always valued the association.
Best wishes for the new year
Kind regards

Lesley Reynolds Joins The Committee

We are pleased to announce that Lesley Reynolds has agreed to join the committee, once elected, with effect from the AGM in February 2020. She will replace Alan Draper as secretary, who has decided to stand down and not seek reelection in 2020.

Lesley was the Deputy Head of Derby Grammar until earlier this year and has since retired. She will be an asset to the committee and the society as a whole and we welcome her knowledge, drive and expertise in so many areas.

We thank Alan for all he has done for the society as its secretary, which is sometimes a thankless and time-consuming task. We know he will be spending more time in Spain now and we wish him well and good health.

Remembrance Day Service 2019

Our Annual Service of Remembrance was held on Sunday 10th November 2019 at the War Memorial at St. Helens House.
There was a healthy turn out of ODs and guests including representatives from Derby Grammar School and some parents, which helped to make the service inclusive, reflective and poignant for all who attended. We were also very pleased to welcome members of the local Army Cadet Force who laid memorial crosses for the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force at the memorial.

Thanks to our President Ralph Holden and archivist Barrie Sheard for organising and making the preparations for the event.
