Description

Published in 2018, this 150-page volume narrates the story of how “the Corps” evolved in 1862 as part of the national Volunteer movement, to become an Officer Training Corps in 1910 as an adjunct of the Territorial Force. As such, many of its members fought in both world wars, and the book includes lists of those who served and those who died, plus those whose names are inscribed on the School war memorial outside St. Helen’s House.

Post-war, the Corps became part of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) from 1948 and the 111-year long story concludes with the dissolution of the CCF in 1973.

These pages inevitably also contain a history of the School, of which “the Corps” was such a distinct and distinguishing feature of School life. It should also appeal to all those who have an interest in the general history of the School, and of its eventual evolution into the present Derby Grammar School.

The story is illustrated by 46 photographs, plus timelines, charts, and tables, listing the names of former cadets and pupils who served in the Boer War, Great War, and WW11. It is a tale worth telling, and thanks to the contributions of many Old Boys, is worthily told in these pages.
