We are pleased to advertise the forthcoming Virtual Speech Day at Derby Grammar School. Obviously a normal day is out of the question so the school is doing what it can for its students.

The following has been received so please try and tune in if you can:

Dear valued guest,
We are delighted to invite you to our first ever virtual Speech Day event next Friday 3 July at 2pm. 
With the current state of affairs and restrictions on public gatherings, we have decided to do an online event to round both the term and academic year off in a celebratory manner. We will be live streaming our usual speeches, musical performances and award ceremony and would love for you to join us by clicking the following link next Friday afternoon from 1:45pm: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/derby-grammar-school 
 
As you can appreciate, our usual September event involves almost 1000 people congregated at the Riverside venue and unfortunately bookings for mass gatherings are prohibited at present. However, we did not want to miss out on arguably the most significant date in our school calendar and so once restrictions on gatherings begin to lift we hope to supplement our virtual Speech Day with a celebratory event in the Autumn where our prize winners announced on Friday 3rd July can physically receive their prizes and we can bid farewell to our Year 13 pupils in style.

The David Walker Memorial Lecture
The Old Derbeian Society are proud to announce Jimmy McLoughlin as the special guest delivering the annual David Walker Memorial Lecture, 2019.

As former Special Adviser and Business Director to Prime Minister Theresa May, Jimmy will share with us what really goes on behind the doors of Number 10.

About Jimmy McLoughlin
Jimmy is a former pupil of Derby Grammar School. He left in 2005 to take his place at the University of Birmingham to read Political Science. From University he joined the PR and digital marketing agency Fleishman Hilliard as Account Manager before moving to Bell Pottinger, a multinational PR, reputation management and marketing agency as Associate Partner, and then Associate Director. In 2014 he moved to the Institute of Directors as their Deputy Head of Policy before joining Number 10 Downing Street in August 2016 as the Special Adviser on Business Relations, a key role which liaises between Downing Street and business.

Jimmy was awarded an OBE in Theresa May’s resignation honours for political and public service.

Tickets and timings
Doors open at 5pm and the lecture commences at 5.30pm. Please take your seat for 5.15pm.

The event is open to all. It will be followed by a short Q&A session where you are invited to put your questions to Jimmy.

Wine, soft drinks and canapes are available to all after the lecture.

Class of 1950 Reunion 2019

Report of the meeting held at The Five Lamps on Tuesday 17th September 2019

On this occasion 10 of the group made the meeting (That is 9 from the class of 1950 plus Barrie Sheard – our adopted friend and the OD Archivist.)

The meeting was totally informal and we all enjoyed a couple of hours of good conversation accompanied by some excellent food and drink. The food almost did not happen since the ‘Five Lamps’ were catering for a large funeral party (of 100+) and we were almost half an hour into the meeting before they decided that it was possible for us to order food!

We received apologies for absence, greetings and good wishes from ten of our number who were unable to join us. I trust that it was their intention for me to pass this on to the group. Anyway, this confirms the active interest of 20 of us – so we stand a chance of making double figures at meetings for a bit longer. Hopefully, this list will provide some feeling of contact across the group so please feel free to make contact with anyone yourself.

COMPETITION WINNER ANNOUNCED

Following the terrific success of the School Memories Competition, we have now selected the winner as Alan Hancock OD (1946-1953) for his submission entitled Derby School After WW2
We will shortly be posting this article on the site, subject to Alan’s permission, for all to read. We will also be serialising some great work by Martin Holmes OD (1940-1947) in the very near future.
